picture of The AlmaIt says much for the changes in pub interiors in recent years that this one can be pinpointed as having the feel of the first wave of gastropub makeovers. Loungey furnishings at the front of the pub and more formal tables at the back, it's a look that feels almost old fashioned compared to some of the more lairy pub conversions we've seen of late. This one's a subdued, grown-up affair: its maroon walls suggestive of restful imbibing rather than riotous drinking (though some of the neighbours disagree). It's definitely a foodie pub (its web site once announced that "the dartboard has been swapped for a blackboard of modern pub food" - which made us wonder what they got for their pool table) though the dining space at the rear doesn't dominate proceedings. This one might not be to traditional pub tastes but unless you're a local of many years standing it's a safe bet for a drink on Newington Green Road.
