how to find it:
Chancery Lane: walk up Gray's Inn Road. After the main junction with Theobalds Road/Clerkenwell Road, take the second right, Elm Street (by the "Butty Boys") and follow it along (as it becomes Mount Pleasant) until you find the pub. Farringdon: turn right out of the station, then, at the main junction ahead turn right along Farringdon Road. At the crossroads with traffic lights, turn left down Clerkenwell Road, until you reach Laystall Street. Turn right along that road until you reach Mount Pleasant at the end, then turn right and keep ahead until you reach the pub on your right.

The Apple Tree is no longer the posties' favourite that it once was, having gone rather more upmarket, like much of the surrounding neighbourhood (and pubs therein). What's more, the pub now has both the decor and prices to match this embourgeoisment. There's rather an abundance of arty things (prints, paintings, sculptures) on the walls and around and about, the occasional sofa, and a gastro-food menu. As well as being expensive, the pub is fairly expansive, though, and service is friendly and often surprisingly prompt, even when there's quite a crowd in. Even after the refurbishment and restyling, though, this remains a proper pub, and only the most ignorant philistine or hardline class warrior would describe it as pretentious. A solid three-pinter.
