picture of The Daniel DefoeThe Defoe is one of the more traditional pubs in Stokey, in terms of decor and clientele. There's an above average range of lagers and beers, which includes Red Stripe on tap, plus a good range of guest ales, all served up by friendly and polite bar staff. Despite the interior being nothing spectacular, there's a (newly refurbished) beer garden and the place seems to dissuade Stoke Newington's more familiar inhabitants: the trendy three wheeled pram driving family. Sadly, the pool table has disappeared and the choice of music can occasionally be laughably bad - Europop to 80s soft rock ballads are the mainstay, but it is getting better. After knocking it down to a two pint rating in 2006 after some truly awful food we're happy to report the menu has now changed and is vastly better. In an area with a lot of pubs, the Defoe its perfectly fine for an afternoon of good beer, good food and good company.

Eating at The Daniel Defoe ... we last ate here on 05/08/2007

New, smaller menu. The £8.50 Sunday Roast is very good, with proper meat, but the portions aren't exactly large (presumably to leave enough space for some sorbet). Normally served until 7.30pm
