Given what happened to the Phene Arms the phrase 'revamped pub in Chelsea' is one we're still wary of. All that may change given this redesign to the old Front Page pub, which has been transformed into something pleasing to both diners and drinkers alike. Out goes the pale wood and butchers block slabs and in comes dark paint work and Formica topped tables. There's a whiff of the continent about the place - helped along by an adaptation of that old Toulouse-Lautrec poster of the chap in the hat and scarf - yet there's still a traditional pub at the heart of things (there's almost a queue in winter time for the seats around the real open fire). The use of the Pig's Ear name on the food and drink side of things is a witty touch: you can nibble on deep fried porcine lugs whilst trying a pint of Pig's Ear beer from the Uley Brewery in Gloucestershire. Although the bar menu is fairly priced, the £3 for a drop of Uley's finest reminds you you're in Chelsea. Oh, and there's a dining room upstairs (which can be hired). This is one of the more impressive pub reworkings we've seen recently and one that (thankfully) doesn't live up to one interpretation of its new name.
