For every scary locals' boozer we recommend avoiding, it's always a pleasure to be able to recommend one less, well, scary. From a rather average exterior, the Monarch initially drew us in with its ornate etched bar and a counter adorned with pot plants. Overall, the ramshackle nature of the place, such as the bucket and mop in one corner, or the TV perched on a couple of speakers couldn't detract from what is a good-looking pub. It was quiet on our visit, which is apparently often the case here, but the random locals were genuinely friendly. Pubs like this are an endangered species, often with clear reason, but in the case of the Monarch, we wish it a brighter future. Some of the younger Stokie residents would do well to come here as a change from the nearby trendy bar/dining rooms. With a few more customers and some real ale, this could easily be a three-pint rated pub.
