Why is it that so many of the traditional pubs that we really like just don't stack up on paper? Your passing American tourist will be baffled why this cramped, slightly grubby, feature-free drinks vendor is an automatic three pinter. It's small - with no more than four dozen punters in, all the stools round the semi-island bar are taken and the handful of tables are fully occupied. It doesn't appear to do non-liquid refreshment. The board outside which advertises "terrestrial" sport - so look elsewhere for the Saturn Korfball league - on two screens even suggests you bring your own food while you watch it. Bring spyglasses too, as the high level screens are probably no bigger than the one in your kitchen. But it's a proper London boozer. Some impressive traditional pub mirrors, and apparently genuine Victorian prints and portraits scatter the walls, IPA, Abbot and Speckled Hen are professionally served and the mix of local workers - white and blue collar - makes it feel like a local that has been there for ever.
