The Clarence, a touristy, civil servanty pub on Whitehall has always walked the line between 'cosy' and 'dingy', so when a refurb took place recently we wondered how it would end up. And now we've popped in we feel its not bad at all. The exterior has gone from a bland-looking green to a handsome shade of red; indeed we saw the new signs being installed - they were all completely identical to the old ones, apart from the colour. Inside, its not a pub with a huge amount of natural light, but they've worked with this problem and the leather bench seating, curtains and dividers give it the elegant look of somewhere considerably older than a 2007 vintage. There are a respectable four ales available - albeit predictable ones - which are accompanied by the usual lager taps, some of which are now becoming so monstrous they probably need planning permission. Overall this has been a considered refurbishment and makes some nearby pubs look rather dated.
