Mulberry, Hammersmith  

The Stamford Brook end of Goldhawk Road might not be as 'gritty' the Shepherds Bush bit, but it's still not the sort of place you'd expect a bar like Mulberry, which sits opposite a row of shuttered shops, a used car lot and one of those budget chicken takeaways which have an American state in their name. But here it is, with large picture windows, pleasant interior and an understated Mulberry tree logo. A range of premium beers and a good wine list is complimented by a perfectly acceptable pint Spindrift, the ale for people who don't like ale, all served up by a (the only) friendly member of staff. The distinct musty smell however encouraged us to decant to the benches out front. If you transplanted this place to Upper Street or Clapham, you'd be cramming 'em in, but here, on a Tuesday evening we were two of only four people present. Perhaps weekends get busier, when the 2am late license kicks in, but the poor chef in the kitchen must be bored midweek, twiddling with his spatula, waiting in vain for the young clientele to arrive. Redcat's companion claims to have never seen it remotely busy when passing; not a good sign, especially when the two closest rivals - Raven and Anglesea Arms - were nicely busy.
