picture of Peldon RoseFrom the exterior, the Peldon Rose is one of the prettiest pubs we've reviewed. Festooned with flowers and a trellis over the gate, without garish pub signs to impair the view, it looks like an immaculate little cottage. A pond to one side and a lovely grassed back garden add to the well-maintained impression. Inside too, low 15th century beams and an open fire add a charm and warmth which would make most pubs green with envy - its a shame the same couldn't be said for the rather bland conservatory extension. Sadly, as is the case with many a country pub, food has now come to the fore to ensure sufficient custom. Although only half the pub is dedicated to the restaurant, on our Saturday early evening visit we were the only people not eating and had to make do with seats in the garden; we suppose it's simply a testament to the quality of the locally soured food, which gets rave reviews and is pretty good. If you want to enjoy a drink here, your best bet is to visit in the afternoon or late in the evening, when they aren't serving food. Otherwise, if you plan to eat, especially on Sunday, we recommend booking ahead.

Eating at the Peldon Rose ... we last ate here on 10/07/2008

Classic, vaguely upmarket pub/restaurant menu. Scampi and chips with salad was both hearty and pretty good. The chocolate dessert was execellent. Prices for mains go into the mid teens, while desserts are around a fiver.
