picture of The KenilworthOne of a string of boozers that line Rose Street, just on the edge of the Georgian New Town of Edinburgh, the Kenilworth is probably one of the more welcoming to passing strangers. It's certainly one of the most elegant, inside and out. Situated in a former residence of Sir Walter Scott (one of whose novels gives the pub its name), the Kenilworth comprises a front island bar and a separate dining area to the back. All in all the pub has a certain, almost austere, charm, with mirrors lining some of the walls and a lovely ceiling with chandelier lighting not quite banishing a certain dark atmosphere. There are several real ales on hand pumps, including regular guest ales - we enjoyed some appropriately named Pitch Black stout, and a moderately extensive bar food menu. It's all agreeable enough.
