picture of North NineteenNorth Nineteen is pleasant refurbished pub on the back streets off the Holloway Road. The post-war building is attractive enough and the refurbishment considerate: the two separate bars remain, while a back area with heavy flock wallpaper adds character. Stripped floorboards - the stock in trade of any refurb - give a light and airy, but not unpleasant, feeling. Being sandwiched between a cluster of council estates and Holloway's Victorian flatshareland, there was a genuinely (and surprisingly) mixed crowd. It helps that the landlord is a consummate host and is clearly trying his best to make this a comfortable pub. There are a trio of ales on and a tasty, home-made menu on offer. There are also regular music nights and a recent mini-ale festival seemed to be successful. Due to it's location we wonder if this place will receive the wider audience it deserves, but for the time being, the residents of N19 have a cracking community local on their hands.

Eating at the North Nineteen ... we last ate here on 16/03/2008

The homemade Smoked Mackerel Pate starter (£4.75) was very tasty, but was more like mashed-up Mackerel and had too many tiny bones to make it entirely enjoyable. Meanwhile, Sunday Roast at £9.50 needed to be good to make good on the boast of being the best in the area - and it was. The lamb seemed suspiciously grilled rather than roasted, but the flavours were spot on and the gravy superb.
