The Lincolnshire Poacher is a handsome, traditional pub on the banks of the river Welland - the river that bisects the town of Spalding. Easy to find if you're a tourist - the water taxi stops close by - we can imagine the pub gets pretty full at summer weekends, but our winter weekend visit, was quiet (and pleasant). There's real ale on the hand pumps, unfortunately only one, Pride, was available on our visit, but the welcome was warm and the interior cosy - with an open fire, lots of different little nooks and crannies to hide away in and the walls decorated with a lot of fine old enamelled signs. It serves traditional pub grub with Lincolnshire sausages (naturally) featuring on the menu - very good they were too - and the portions are hearty. Pubs in out-of-the-way towns like Spalding can be a bit of a lottery, but if you're in these parts, it seems the Lincolnshire Poacher is a pretty safe bet.
