Like seeing the old Watney Coombe and Reid emblem outside a pub, spotting the 1970s Courage cockerel is a sign - a sign that you're about to enter an unreconstructed local's pub. In this case, that initial assessment was more or less correct. It's a diminutive place, not unattractive from the outside and comfortable enough within. Both clean and tidy, the landlord is friendly enough and a little back garden to offers somewhere for those smokers to go. The problem here - and it makes it difficult to give any sort of thorough assessment - was the lack of customers. Sure, it was a Tuesday night but one punter doesn't make for an atmosphere. It might pick up later in the week, but until we return the Whitesmiths Arms receives a humble two pint rating. Suffice to say there was nothing ostensibly wrong with this pub on our visit.
