The Wheatsheaf is one of those McMullen's countryside pubs which promises more than it delivers. Languishing on the main thoroughfare somewhere between Nazeing and Waltham Abbey, this is a mock-Tudor pub with a boringly refurbished interior - expect lots of hard surfaces and neutral, safe colours. The car park filled to capacity should've been the clue, but the enormous rear garden was a family friendly nightmare - kids everywhere. This popularity had other knock-on effects - with the waiting time for food on Sunday afternoon reaching up to 90 minutes, it was clear they couldn't quite cope with the quantity of requests - even if they looked like they were working flat-out. It would, however, have been nice for them to advertise the waiting times, rather than having to queue up at the food till for 10 minutes to find out. In the hit or miss world of McMullen's pubs, this is definitely a 'miss'.
