Ash Vale

address:

Quarry Street, GU1 3XQ

phone:

how to find it:

It's around a ten-minute walk or so from Guildford station, leaving by the city (as opposed to the university and cathedral) exit of the station, and closer still to the town centre and the bus station. The route is a bit difficult to describe (because of the vagaries of one-way systems and pedestrian crossings), though, so best consult a map. It's worth the walk.

picture of Kings HeadHurrah for good pubs that look, feel, and act like good pubs. Not too bright, but without being gloomy. Serving a decent range of food, but with its role as a venue for convivial drinking still centre-stage. A decent range of drinks, too (four real ales on hand pumps), but without being trainspottery (or overly blokeish) about it. The Kings Head, which dates back to the 17th century, manages to be all of these things, admirably. There's also a most agreeable patio area outside, for those occasions when the sun is shining. Friendly staff, and loyal locals. You could certainly do worse when in the centre of Guildford than pop in here.
