picture of BirdcageAmongst the trendiness of Columbia Road's restaurants, boutiques and bars, The Birdcage is a stalwart of the traditional East End pub. Even its name is appropriate for the area - the Huguenot immigrants who moved into the Bethnal Green during the 18th century had a fascination for caged song birds. Anyway, the outside features some attractive original green tiling, while the inside is pretty nice too, with a gantried bar and a homely feel - all helped by attentive service and cheerful locals. There's plenty of lively entertainment on offer in the evenings, ranging from karaoke to Country and Western evenings, during which it was great to see people really getting into the spirit of things. The Birdcage is certainly worth a visit if you're in the area and have a hankering for more down-to-earth establishments.
