picture of Lowlander Grand CafeThere's a lot to be thankful to Belgium for. Unassuming country that it is, it promotes those fluffy waffles with the sticky chocolate sauce, has a football team that England can usually beat and of course, has a love of beer - all different types of beer. Nestled in the City, just a stones throw from the Gherkin, Lowlander highlights those beer-loving ways, and welcomes you in to taste as many as you like: fruit beer, Trappist beer, blonde beer - they have over 100 to tempt you, as well as draught varieties and a menu that features meatballs and mussels. But not on the same plate. They're trying to emulate Belgian/Dutch café culture, and as such, they've pretty much succeeded. We encountered attentive table service, posh loos with a flattering full-length mirror and excellent beer served in chilled glasses, as well as double-fried chips - what more could you want? They have a sister bar in Covent Garden too, but this one is tucked away just enough to be a secret. For now. If you like your beer from the low countries, this is recommended.
