This is one of the better Cardiff centre pubs, catering for a mixed crowd of mainly students and lawyers from the nearby university departments and legal firms, respectively. No exciting exterior, but a pleasing and woody interior provides a restive mood during the day which changes to a dynamic evening vibe. A range of beers are available along with decent wine. Board games can be hired should you need distraction during a beery afternoon - often a welcome bonus. The pub will be very busy when showing rugby matches, so don't expect this to be a place for hiding away from them, you'll be disappointed. Food is nowadays merely adequate, no longer what it was even a couple of years ago, shifting the Pen & Wig firmly into just drinking territory. But with the reappearance of proper ales, this pub retains a definite cachet. From the flagstones up this hits you as a pub to while away time in an 1890's city-on-the-up vibe without gagging on 'olde worlde charm.' In a city centre generally lacking decent boozers, a sly favourite - spoilt by commercialism over quality, saved for the people by style, location and the staff.
