Plenty of London's pubs claim they begun when all around them was fields: here's an old boozer which actually still is. It may be a long trek to The Rising Sun, but if you like your pubs with a bit of character then it's definitely one to make the journey for. With its low ceiling, flagstone floors and snugs, it's the sort of pub that would be praised to the hilt (or more likely, converted into a gastropub) if it was in Zones 1 or 2. Out in Mill Hill, there's not much likelihood of this one being 'discovered' and ending up as the location for an ES Magazine fashion shoot. You get a decent pint, a pub menu free of pine nuts and jus and a pleasant atmosphere in which to chew the fat. Think you've visited all of London's historic pubs? You haven't until you've had a pint in this one.
