We couldn't believe our luck, riding a rare no 51 bus on which the windows were not so etched to buggery by Welling/Cray Valley teenage scum that we could see out of them. We were also surprised, in this rather nondescript, bleak, post-fenland area, to encounter what looked like a rather historic, perhaps even charming, boozer, and promised we'd be back. When we returned, we found Ye Olde Black Horse - "built 1692, rebuilt 1892" - just slightly disappointing. Not a bad pub by any means, but just a little more ordinary inside than the exterior had led us to expect. Old oak beams here and there, unfussy, unkempt décor of the old skool, three real ales on hand pumps, for the time being separate smoking and no-smoking areas. There seemed to be a slight emphasis on football-watching when we visited, but that might not be evident at other times. A decent-sized and rather green beer garden out the back, too. So, while not the step back in time we had hoped for, this is a perfectly serviceable three-pinter, and probably one of your better bets around here.
