picture of George TavernOne might expect a rough-looking, frosted glazed pub in Stepney to house old blokes nursing their pints. What greeted us then? Dark Side of the Moon played loud, a man whooshing himself around on a rusty hospital wheelchair, a DJ in a tuxedo cycling in circles and two girls taking photos of an old man who'd inadvertently wandered in thinking this was a normal pub. It seems we had stumbled in on victims suffering the acuter stages of Hoxtonitis. In fairness, when the DJ got off his bike to do some work, the tunes were good - nice to know the kids are still into the Floyd, along with reggae, German drinking songs and Dire Straits. The amount of skipping and crackling however indicated they don't take as much care of their 45s as they do their hair. The interior, like the customers, was post-modern; a magnificent Victorian tiled frieze behind the bar was one of a handful of original features in a pub which now looked more like a squat. Sunday afternoon awards this a two pint rating but a Friday night when the bands are a-playing might bring that up, or possibly down.
