The Square, Nottingham  

Every major city centre has at least half of dozen pubs of the Squares ilk where the focus is on noise, lager, noise, cheap food, noise and a bit more noise. It would therefore be very easy to lay the boot into the Square simply for its premise, but to be fair it carries off its role in life with a bit more quality than some of its compatriots. The large two storey layout, for example, is kept clean by an army of attentive staff whose efforts mean than the admittedly boring dark wooden interior is usually comfortable, and there is always something going on during its many themed nights. But alas, despite some flourishes in the delivery sense, the core characteristics of its chain pub specifications let the Square down. Did we mention the noise for example? Well the Square has it in spades thanks to a cut price lager/cocktail selection that attracts large numbers of drunken young 'uns who compete passionately with the multiple blaring TV screens for the title of chief sound polluter. Admittedly, the Square doesn't get as threatening as some of its neighbours thanks to a strong door policy, but make no mistake, this is a pub designed as a launch pad for a heavy night.
