picture of Skinners ArmsA fairly middling gastropub that does well on the food front, but doesn't quite come up to scratch on the more important pub side. The main problem is a layout which really fails to maximise a good floor space by falling into the fatal trap of going for style over substance - hence a big imposing bar, a pointless elevated floor near the windows and furniture that is somewhat sparse and a bit chunky. The result is that while the Skinners is nice to look at (with plush carpets to boot), it is also cluttered and cramped, with snug standing being the norm at peak periods. The tap selection isn't much of a compensation as it is pretty standard, if reasonably priced and well delivered by the attentive staff. The food, as already mentioned, is the big bonus thanks to its portion size, price and delivery - but really this only pulls the Skinners up to a two pint rating.
