how to find it:

Main Road is an accurate description, as the pub is on the A531 between the M6 and Crewe - it's literally just off the motorway. Take exit 16 onto the A500 to Crewe and then left onto the A531 toward Newcastle under Lyme. the pub is about 10 minutes down the road on the right hand side. If you're coming from Newcastle, head out on the A525 and bear right when it meets the A531. The pub's just a few minutes ahead on the left hand side.

picture of The Hand and TrumpetRecently refurbished, this rather large pub does exactly what you'd expect of a large pub in the countryside: it's a meeting place where you can have a drink or eat a nice meal without causing any ructions. The size of the pub means that it doesn't normally feel crowded, though we'd guess the outside gets busy when (if?) the weather's better. Decent beers were on tap last time we were in, with a number of guest beers and local brews - too much selection for the sort time we were there. There's a decent menu, with traditional English food alongside more gastro fare, but all reasonably priced and well prepared and presented. The wine list is nothing to sneeze at either, with wines from all over to go with whatever you might choose on the menu. One thing of interest is that they claim to have over 100 kinds of whiskey, though they included rye (bourbon) in this description. We didn't have the opportunity to try all of them, so we'll have to go back again soon.

Eating at The Hand & Trumpet ... we last ate here on 12/8/2007

Excellent English food alongside some gastro options - still, there's something there for the vegetarians, too. Portions are good sized and the puddings are excellent.
