Looking for an even more alternative slice of Soho? One which doesn't involve standing in the road outside a packed pub surrounded by media types, uncomfortably holding your pint? Well, look no further than Garlic & Shots. Like its compadre the Intrepid Fox, this is essentially a Goth bar, hidden downstairs at the back of a cute little restaurant. Its tiny and dark, getting busy with only a few people, but in compensation - and rare for the area - there's a large outside seating area, hidden at the back. As you might expect, it plays appropriately Goth and heavy rock music, but unlike the Fox, doesn't have a dress code, even if you might look odd arriving here in a suit and tie. Drinks are on the unusual side, too. Apart from predictable bottled beers, in keeping with the name there's a wide choice of weird and wonderful (vodka) shots as well as garlic beer - essentially lager with a few cloves crushed into it. Probably not a drink to have on a first date, half a pint is, we discovered, quite sufficient.
