Granted, its a lovely looking building and the interior retains a fair share of handsome original features, but still a rather gloomy affair. Our weeknight visit found six people in situ from the nearby estate - a handful of older folks in the saloon and a couple of younger ones playing pool in the public bar; it might pick up on weekends, but don't bank on it. Tatty chairs and peeling paint indicate the last time this place received some TLC was probably when Brit-pop was first taking off. Service was fine, though, and there were a couple of ales on, even if the Harvey's gave this reviewer a throbbing head for the night. Ultimately this is a 'real' pub, in an area slowly losing such things - the Clarendon two minutes away is a polar opposite in terms of clientele and execution. It's managed to survive this long without conversion into flats or the ignominy of becoming an identikit gastropub, so all we can do is hope the future of this pub is brighter than its present.
