picture of The EagleA stone's throw from the Guardian newspaper, this is the place that probably bears the responsibility for originating the term "Gastropub", as it was the first to try and offer new wave cooking and an old fashioned pint in the same joint. It has it's own art gallery upstairs and the stripped out bar with visible cooking area and the Farrow and Ball paint job mark it down as Deeply Hip. But they also attempt the difficult trick of being a friendly local where you can just stop in and read the paper, have a chat and a beer. We applaud the effort even if we're not entirely sure they bring this combination off. The food is very, very good and probably worth a visit just for that, but how many people come to this one just for a drink and a natter? Still, if you're going to go to a gastropub you may as well give a look to the Daddy of them all.
