picture of NeptuneThis is a traditional and small, even intimate, one-roomed pub that is well kept, so much so that imbibing here is almost like drinking in someone's front room. The lower part of the windows is frosted, adding to the privacy within, and the lighting is subtle, old-fashioned, and smart. Walking through the door, as non-locals, we initially suspected that everyone was turning to look at us, but we concluded that in fact the object of so many gazes was the TV screen showing horse racing above the door. And, in fact, when we left we were bid farewell by the bar staff, and, most unusually, someone even apologised for swearing (not at us, we add). There was quite an excitable crowd in when we visited, expressing much enthusiasm at both the racing and football results being screened (especially, it must be said, when the sports did not work out as planned, or expected, with both of the main North London football teams coming in for more or less equal deprecation). There are occasional discos and race nights as well, while, as a Charles Wells pub, Bombardier and Eagle are on tap. (Cheap Bacardi Breezers too, although we haven't decided whether that is a positive or negative thing.) Not really somewhere you'd go out of your way to visit, the Neptune is none the less a good honest local, and a real boon for its neighbourhood.
