The country-pub appearance of the Black Bull might seem incongruous sitting next to an industrial-looking M&S on Whetstone High Road, but on a cold winter night it certainly looked inviting. Inside, unfortunately, the furniture is too thinly spread out for such a large space . However, despite this (and despite the propensity for Ember Inn pubs to look like hotel foyers) the Black Bull manages to stay on the right side of bland. Our visit found the pub pleasantly busy, if not exactly hectic, and filled with a mixture of locals - both young (perhaps dressed for going to 'up West' later) and the not-so-young. As with others in the chain, there were a couple of well kept ales and an extensive food menu. Although it doesn't manage the traditional olde pubbe experience they're trying to create, its not bad for the area.
