The Horse & Groom is an oft overlooked but beautiful Victorian pub a few minutes from Oxford Street. Along with plenty of original tiling and woodwork, the pub has four distinct sections: the front is predominantly standing room, the middle area has a rare-to-see dartboard and the back room is the most cosy, with bench seating and a fireplace. There's also a very civilised upstairs bar. Our numerous visits have given the impression that, although busy, its probably the only pub in Fitzrovia which doesn't become packed like a rush hour tube train - its usually possible to get a seat. Definitely an advantage for after work drinks, it points to possibly being frighteningly quiet at other times. Its possible the pub's position - most other nearby pubs in occupy imposing corner plots - means it blends in with the anonymous shops on Great Portland Street too much. Certainly a shame, as its a pub with plenty of potential.
