how to find it:

Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village, with a 15 minute walk in-between. Leave Highgate tube by the pedestrian exit, take a left and cross straight over the large junction onto Southwood Lane Take the second right onto Castle Yard which leads to North Road. Turn right and its on the right. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill in the heart of the village, the pub is over the other side of the mini-roundabout a minutes walk down North Road on the right, past The Wrestlers pub. Phew.

picture of VictoriaOne of the last traditional boozers in Highgate (in terms of clientele and décor), The Victoria sacrificed itself a couple of years back at the altar of trying to make money and gave itself a carpet-removing makeover to entice the younger crowd. Happily, it works well here, with a rich, dark interior, lots of plants and plenty of character. Its location - a bit of a trek from both Highgate Village and Highgate tube - could have easily sounded the death-knell, but it was nice to see the pub (also recently under new management) filled with a good mix of people. Add a choice of three well-kept real ales and even a Sunday singalong night means the Victoria becomes another pub-centric reason to visit Highgate.
