Thankfully and to some, surprisingly, there are a lot of nice Victorian houses in parts of Hackney, missed by both developers and the Luftwaffe. Interspersed in these domiciles are some fine pubs and the Spurstowe Arms is one of them. Now it's the 21st Century, the pub has been done up in a kind of "bare brick living room" style - complete with standard and table lamps - but the overall effect is not at all displeasing and it has quite a homely atmosphere. The beer garden is very nicely done and provides a pleasant place for an evening's quaffing and conversation (and smoking, nowadays), helped in unseasonal times by outdoor heating. The beer is good - Black Sheep, Flowers and Pedigree on the hand pumps and a reasonable range on the other pumps - including the now ubiquitous Leffe and Hoegaarden. The food is OK too, maybe a little pricey, but some of the items are particularly nice - we loved the Arbroath Smokies and the British cheeses. As each day passes, Hackney seems to move further upmarket and the Spurstowe only adds to the impression that, more and more, West (London) is moving East.
