An average boozer in a prime site on Great Eastern Street? It couldn't last. One of the few remaining old school drinking dens in Hoxton has been taken over and the Hoxtonites are beginning to descend. But fear not. For despite a fair few new wave and new romantic wannabes, the hair-care product heavy atmosphere and (rather good) obscure electro-punk/rock nights on the first floor bar, it seems devoid of much of the annoying judgmental preening clientele who permeate other nearby venues. Be who you wanna be seems to be the mantra. Perhaps it's this slapdash approach which has kept them away; the pub looks pretty untouched from the outside since its olden days - rough and little sleazy - and inside all they've done is swap the chairs for sofas and remove the carpet. It looks like a student flat from 1991. The only criticism is that the beer, including the lager, tastes poorly kept - but hopefully that'll improve. A cool pub in Hoxton that isn't annoying? It can't last.
