This place has made quite a splash since its recent arrival, winning CAMRA's southeast London 2005 pub of the year. At first glance, the Gowlett is not the type of establishment you'd associate with real ale heads: stone-baked pizzas on the menu, DJs creating a "mellow vibe" on Sunday afternoons, children and dogs welcome too (it is sometimes hard to tell the difference) - hell, they even have plastic toys at the ready. The full story is behind the bar, however, with three (on our visit) real ales on tap and organic wines on offer. The smart interior refurb of an old boozer has been done fairly well, even if the style is a little familiar by now. Nice to see the handsome wood panelling on the walls intact too. As a polished all-rounder, the Gowlett has certainly got matters in hand. In an otherwise poor area for drinking, this is as good as it gets.
