picture of The Goose at the GeorgeThere's clearly no accounting for taste sometimes, because this cheap, poor excuse for a pub is frequently packed almost to capacity. Once simply called The George, there was a lot of fuss made by the Enfield Preservation Society when they tried to rename it The Goose and Granite, thus losing the name it used throughout the last couple of centuries. A compromise was reached over the name, but the £800,000 refit which went ahead in the late 90s was far less accommodating. What was previously an average pub became a weekend evening chav magnet extraordinaire, where aggressive teenagers vie for elbow room at the bar and seats in the window. With the closure of the truly awful Bar:Me over the road things have only got worse. Slight updates here and there and a couple of licks of paint, but it's still a soulless place, often filled with horrible people, as we're sure the bouncers will attest to.
