Nothing illustrates the short-sightedness of town planners, the cynicism of large corporations, or the absolute disregard of local authorities than what is happening in Camden Market. This once slightly grubby but amazingly varied, vibrant and unique area of London brings tourists from all over the world. When they arrive nowadays however, they find its not exactly how it used to be, with multinational chains in the process of a hostile take-over. Suffolk Wharf exemplifies what they might find. For sitting next to a Starbucks on the side of the Regent's Canal, is the large, garish and ugly Lloyd's No1, housed in a building designed to maximise profit rather than be in keeping with the area. The potentially lethal combination of cheap booze, primary colours and terrible music means weekends are a magnet for every baseball cap wearing geeza who finds the other pubs in the area too 'posh'. If you come on a sunny weekday afternoon and sit outside, its pretty pleasant, but that doesn't make Ice Wharf itself any better; it had more integrity when it used to be a scrap yard.
