Standing in one of the few parts of central Croydon that has, thus far, managed to escape the depredations of the Luftwaffe and successive generations of local councillors, the Rose and Crown sells itself as one of the town's oldest pubs, located in a listed building that has apparently served that purpose since 1752. It is an agreeable building, with some pleasant and ageing fittings, stained glass and several seating areas. Trouble is, it's a little run down now, and the absence of real ales didn't impress us either. We were bemused that the only beermats we could find had an anti-drugdealing theme, and, to an even greater extent by the barmaid's choice of reading matter-"Mad Frank's London". With a bit more attention this could be a really good pub. For now, it's a bit better than OK.
