This pub, now resplendent on the outside with flames painted on the walls, is a favourite haunt of students from the nearby university and those seeking a more alternative experience on Holloway Road. The subtly lit interior is dominated by a large rectangular bar, which is surrounded on three sides by seating, including several cosy booths and a number of sofas. At the far end stand four pool tables and a pinball machine. Previously Big Red hosted live bands but now the stage has gone to be replaced by more sofas, while a giant projector screen hangs above them ready to show football. This doesn't seem to have affected their clientele and it's as busy as ever on a weekend. Without entertainment from the stage the jukebox becomes the centre of attention and it doesn't disappoint, especially for fans of rock. Previously we found the bar staff tended to look aggrieved when you interrupted them by doing something audacious like ordering a pint, but this seems to have improved. They can get plenty of practice as Big Red has a late licence.
