Our impressions of this place were rather skewed by a family group shouting aggressively over loud junk music. After they left, and the foul melodies ceased, we were able to appreciate the pub's singularities. A stuffed fox in a glass case, for one. And several ships' wheels, a barometer and lots of pics of tug boats. And a sign warning that unaccompanied children would be sold as slaves! We also espied a caged parrot (live) behind the bar. And a 'yard of ale' glass. We did wonder who might make this their local; it seemed just a bit too smart to be aimed at old salts (or, as this is Erith, retired gravel pit workers-old grits, presumably?), or at younger lads drawn in to play pool. Two things puzzled us somewhat: why not one woman set foot through the doors during our Sunday early evening visit; and why a log, freshly placed on the open fire, burned smelling quite so strongly of creosote. Whatever the answers, should you be passing through Erith, you could probably do worse than drop in here. Probably.
