Having been under new ownership since 2005, the Charles Lamb boasts a good back street setting and a distinctly French influence. Still keeping to the original two room layout, old advertising signs are scattered about and flowers often adorn the tables. Add a great choice of ales on the hand pumps along with bottles of St. Johns Organic Ale and Breton cidre and it all seems rather idyllic. It's a shame then a number of factors let it down. Firstly, due to its diminutive size they've tried to squeeze in too many tables, which can make it feel rather claustrophobic. It also doesn't help when the outside awnings are unfurled, as it can can make it feel gloomy inside, even when the sun is shining. There's also some rather hit and miss service, unfortunately experienced by more than one Fancyapint reviewer and its growing popularity means getting a seat has been rather difficult on numerous occasions, leaving us not knowing where to put ourselves. Even if the Charles Lamb merits attention for its decor, food and beer, the handful of negatives rather sully an otherwise potentially relaxed setting.
