how to find it:
Not the easiest one to chart a course to. Your nearest BR stations are Homerton and Hackney Central but then it's a good 10-15 minutes walk. Plenty of buses go up and down Lower Clapton Road though: 38, 48, 106, 236, 242, 253, 254. If you get off at the bottom of Lower Clapton Road, turn right up Powerscroft Road and then down Blurton Road to the pub. Shouldn't take much longer than 5 minutes from Lower Clapton Road to the pub.

The signs of the smartened up pub are in attendance (the exhibited art for sale, the DJ decks) yet this one still stands out from your usual done up boozer. For a start, the stripped out look actually helps to accentuate the thirties style wood panelling of the back bar and the giant plants (including a lime tree) scattered around soften the corners nicely. Beers? A pretty good selection of Timothy Taylor Landlord, Harvey's Best, London Pride and Adnam's is usually in place. If that doesn't suffice, a small list of wines and a longer one of cocktails will probably do the job. This is a pub that loves it's music though: ever present Soul in the background and two dedicated DJ nights a month (usually second and last Wednesdays). Expect a bit of Northern Soul in there somewhere, though I'm not sure if the parquet floor is suitable for talcum powder and handstands. Unless you're a local, this one isn't the easiest pub to get to, but despite that, it's one worth getting the map and compass out for.
