how to find it:
It'd be easier to get here by boat than by bus, perhaps. But you could get the 387 (destination "Barking Reach") or 369 ("Thames View Estate") buses from opposite Barking tube and rail station, and get off them as soon as they turn off River Road (the road that the follow immediately after they have crossed the A13). Continue walking down River Road, past lots of industrial estates and factories, and eventually, you'll find the pub on the left. (There are only 2 buses a day which actually go all the way to Creekmouth, and they are both at around 8am.)

The Crooked Billet has a pretty unique location, way down at Creekmouth amid sewage plants, gravel works, and industrial estates, yet only a crane's arc from the Thames. It's a bleak place, all told (though big plans are afoot). After trudging down here, we were pleasantly surprised by its quality. It's a two-room pub last refitted in the 1930s, with stained glass all around and a comfortable feel. London Pride was the pick of the pints, and the music veered from Pat Benatar to Boston. A few fruit machines keep the lorry drivers occupied, and the selection of international banknotes behind the bar tells you about the clientele. If you're bored of riverside drinking in Richmond, Greenwich and so on, the Crooked Billet is certainly different, but don't expect ES magazine down here anytime soon.
