This place used to be a magnificent Victorian pub, run by Nicholson's which was subsequently vandalised to convert it to a restaurant, now it's back as a pub. The problem now is we can can't go in the place without remembering what it used to be like. The bar is now in a completely inappropriate position, the old central bar having been ripped out. The ornate tilework and fireplaces thankfully remain, although the Mahogany has been painted deep red and a couple of wrought iron sconces have been screwed through some of the tiles by the fireplace. We could go on, but it will only make us even more tearful. The new place tries to create a bar type vibe, with laidback tunes and a bar oriented tariff and we have to concede, succeeds. There's food most of the day, everyday and it seems pretty popular with the locals. We'd just have preferred it to be in another building.
