A gastropub (actually more of a restaurant), for sure, but one that is straightforwardly classy, rather than pretentious. The Waterloo Bar and Kitchen is popular in the early evenings with those en route to the nearby Old Vic, and the food is excellent. As far as the drinks go, there's a reasonable range of continental beers, including a German wheat beer that puts the stuff they sell in Sam Smiths pubs to shame. In many ways this is much more of a place to eat in, rather than just to drink, but we hear that those only popping in for liquid refreshment are made at home by the welcoming staff. All all in, the Waterloo Bar and Kitchen is a reassuringly civilised and enjoyable place to spend some time.
