The Gate Lodge has been steadily going down the drainpipe for years and has recently completed one almighty belly flop into the cesspit of London publand. Sullen staff, cramped surroundings, decaying furniture, badly kept booze and a pervading smell of cabbage all combine to produce a thoroughly unpleasant drinking experience. And that's leaving aside the horrific toilets that have plunged to such depths it is doubtful a swamp rat would feel comfortable using them. Admittedly this is a pub hamstrung by its small, boxed in architecture that requires the main door to treble up as the ventilation system, the only source of natural light and sole entrance. However, the fact this door is almost always firmly shut is indicative of a complete lack of effort that sentences any customer to a choking, dim and ultimately abysmal time.
