picture of The CastleThe Castle, a grand Victorian pub on an imposing corner plot, is another of the few worthwhile pubs in Walthamstow Village. Being the newer sister pub of the nearby excellent Nags Head, expect visits from the same chatty and exuberant guv'nor, real ales and a wide mix of locals, with a leaning towards younger couples and flatsharers; watch out for a surfeit of kids on weekends afternoon, though. The decor looks like it was done, shall we say, economically and a simple emulsion job sees most corners brightened up. Indeed, the primary coloured decor veers towards what can only be described as 'Australian theme bar' territory, but thankfully, manages to keep on the right side of decency. They also serve food now - we've sampled the popular Sunday carvery - which might give it an advantage over the Nag's Head if you're peckish. Although some nights finds it rather quiet here, the Castle is worth seeking out if you happen to find yourself in 'The Village'.
