There's an argument to make that the Southampton Arms offers a more traditional pub experience than its neighbouring Kentish Town bars; that it's a boozer from the old school, a million miles from gastropubland. Actually visit this one though and you'll find an unfriendly and insular little spot; a despairing little boozer that'll suck the life out of you. It shouldn't necessarily be that way: a dartboard at the back of the pub and drawings on the wall of boxing and racing legends (Mike Tyson and Lester Piggott being the most favoured) suggest a pub of sports fans and banter, but neither were much in evidence on our visit. Uncivil bar staff and a musty air may be ideal for died-in-the-wool regulars, but passers by and seekers of a half decent pub in NW5 will do better to look elsewhere.
