After years of lost potential, the once rough, football focused Queen's Hotel was smartened up a couple of years ago for the benefit of young affluent Crouch-Enders. Architecturally similar to the Salisbury a couple of miles away, in an all too familiar story they decided to go the gastro route. As a former Victorian hotel, little touched since the 1930s, there are many great original features, such as leaded windows, etched glass, fireplaces and a wonderfully ornate ceiling; no surprise its both Grade II listed and very popular. Where the large football screen once hung, there's now a separate dining room with the usual open kitchen, so although the mentality has changed, unhassled drinking still remains the preserve of only half of the pub. The food, up into the £10-13 territory, makes it more expensive than many Crouch End restaurants. Sadly we've had to knock it down to a three pint rating since our last visit - the quality of the food has dropped considerably and the service from some of the staff is getting to be almost rude - most unfortunate.
