picture of The Temperance (ex-Marylebone Bar and Kitchen)Were many tears shed when the Marylebone Bar & Kitchen shut up shop? We had a certain fondness for the place: its sub-DJ Bar atmosphere didn't exactly stand out in an area rich in idiosyncratic boozers, but it was a pub you could actually relax and feel comfortable in. It's now The Temperance: a pub with dining room from the people behind The Endurance and The Perseverance. Gone is the loungey, lazy feel of the previous pub: the Temperance (perhaps understandably, given its name) has a more sober feel, its ground floor bar kitted out with rather formal furnishings - so much so, we thought we were in the dining room (that's upstairs, by the way). The two ales on tap, Adnam's and Greene King IPA, are a good indication that the drinks on offer here don't stray too far from the norm. And whilst a limited bar menu is available downstairs, it appears you have to go upstairs if you're after something more substantial. The jukebox in the corner suggested there's a spot of character lurking in this one, but on our visit at least, the Temperance didn't convince us as a place for a relaxing drink. We'll give this one the benefit of the doubt, put its subdued atmosphere down to "early days" and give it another look the next time we're in the area.
