how to find it:

Dagenham East, turn right and head along Rainham Rd South. Take the fifth road on the right (between a car showroom and a housing estate car park), Crown Street. When the roadway ends, continue along the pedestrianised section that leads to the western part of Crown Street. The pub will soon be on your right, opposite Dagenham Parish Church. Dagenham Heathway: turn right along Heathway, and take the first road on the left, Church Elm Lane (which later on becomes Church Street). Where the main flow of traffic bears right to become Siviter Way, continue ahead towards Dagenham Parish Church. The pub is on the left, just after the junction with Exeter Road.

picture of The Cross KeysLocated at just the spot where Dagenham, all too momentarily, ceases to be a town planner's utopia, the Cross Keys is, if nothing else a historic place - the oldest secular building in town, which has been used as a pub since the mid-17th century. Inside there are low ceilings and beams aplenty (although the external ones are 1960's fake), there are capacious sofas, cosy armchairs and cheery bar staff. Outdoor seating by the 'village green' (itself a creation of the 1970s) is available all the time, from where you can play a game of "spot the faded graffiti praising the IRA for the Brighton bombing" on the wall opposite. The lack of real ales is a bit of a downer, but, worse still - for reasons we leave you to surmise - the pub has now introduced a policy of banning non-regulars whenever they are screening football matches. "YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE" say the many signs underlining this seemingly antisocial policy. And if the pub management don't welcome all-comers, we're sure not encouraging visitors to seek out this place. A pity.
